Hurricane "IRENE"
(CAT 2 Hurricane)

Threatens the eastern coastline of North & South Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, Washington DC, Pennsylvania, New York City, New Jersey, Delaware, Rhode Island, New Hampshire, Maine, & Massachusetts

Virginia Task Force 2 Urban Search & Rescue Team has been activated as of 1400 hrs. today by the Department of Homeland Security and will be staging in a safe area, until directed to move forward as the storm passes through the effected areas.  The task force was activated as a Type 1 Team, with a compliment of 80+ personnel with various specialties and expertise in urban search and rescue operations, ready and willing to handle whatever designated mission or assignment as directed by their operational authorities.

Also activated for this incident, was Virginia Task Force 1, out of Fairfax, Virginia and Maryland Task Force 1, out of Montgomery County, Maryland.  VATF-1 will be staging near Fort Bragg, North Carolina.

USAR Mission:

   The National Urban Search and Rescue System was established under the authority of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in 1989.  It is a framework for structuring local emergency service personnel into integrated disaster response task forces.  VATF2 is located at 513 Viking Drive in Virginia Beach, Virginia and is under the leadership of Fire Chief Steve Cover.  The Task Force can be deployed by FEMA to any national emergency or disaster.

Capabilities of VATF2:

   Physical search and rescue operations in damaged or collapsed structures.  Emergency Medical care for entrapped victims, task force members and search canines. Reconnaissance to determine damage and provide damage assessments for local, state and federal officials. Survey and evaluate Hazardous materials situations.  Structural and hazard evaluations of buildings needed for immediate  occupancy to support disaster relief operations. Stabilization of damaged structures that include shoring and cribbing operations.

   Coordination of the Federal effort with resources to locate, extricate and provide initial medical treatment to victims trapped in collapsed structures resulting from a disaster.

   Virginia Task Force 2 is a specialized rescue organization comprised of highly trained firefighters, EMS personnel, Dog handlers, Engineers and Physicians from cities and departments of Chesapeake, Franklin, James City County, Navy Regional, Newport News, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg and York County.

Currently VATF-2's personnel staffing is full and no applications are being accepted at this time.

However, there's an exception to this affiliation and availability, and that is; only fully qualified
FEMA USAR certified K-9 teams are excepting applications.  Once team availability reaches a point where applications are being accepted, notification will be provided on this web page.  We thank you for your interest in our team and hope that you'll keep us in mind, checking back periodically.   Again, Thank You!
